Review: Uncharted 2

Dubbed by many as 2009’s “Game of the Year,” does Uncharted 2 actually live up to the hype that everyone is giving this game?
Graphics
Without a doubt, Uncharted 2 is a beautiful piece of art for the video game industry. You are not going to find a more incredible visual experience, currently. From snow covered mountains to urban and tropical environments, Uncharted 2 does not disappoint in the graphics department. With everything going on, and exploding, I never once noticed a drop in the frame rate or any graphical glitches, either.

Sound
The voiceovers in Uncharted 2 are exceptional as well! The cast was very talented and believable in this game. It literally was like watching and listening to a movie that, unlike most nowadays, was actually good. The music consists of very smooth and suspenseful orchestral scores that fit perfectly into this game’s settings and dialog, too.

Story
In Uncharted 2 you play as Nathan Drake, treasure hunter, and team up with your friend Harry and his partner Chloe. Together, the three of you set off to steal a specific jade cup from a museum that allegedly will lead to finding the lost 13 ships, full of treasure, from Marco Polo’s fleet. However, you quickly find yourself racing against an ambitious warlord to hunt down a different sacred artifact that could grant infinite power to its wielder. The story gets much more involved than this, as it takes many twists and turns throughout. You’ll meet a few other characters, and by the end of the game, you’re not going to know who to trust.
The story is exceptional and it quickly draws you in. Have you ever read a book that you just couldn’t put down? Well, Uncharted 2 is just like that, which is extremely rare for a video game.

Gameplay
Uncharted 2 is played out in the 3rd person perspective. The cover system is great, similar to other current cover systems found in games, but this isn’t a bad thing. You can’t fix something that is near perfect! You want just being running, gunning, and covering either. Uncharted 2 features a decent amount of platforming and puzzle solving action, too. Some of the platforming can become tedious due to the fact that you might think you are jumping onto something that you actually shouldn’t, resulting in you death. Luckily, you can start over right were you died, usually.
The main, and really only problem with this game is its camera. You will find yourself moving the camera around often, because you may take cover next something you didn’t want to, like a grenade. There are a few other instances where the camera can become a hindrance, but for me, it mainly affected how, where or what I used for cover. This also resulted in me dying, as well.

Replayability
The single player campaign is very short, but it is paced exceptionally well. There are some unlockables after you have completed the game, too. The main draw to this game’s replayability is its great multiplayer mode. There are a number of environments that you will compete in with various weapons and there are even unloackables and upgrades that you can get to give yourself the edge. Some of the modes available include: Deathmatch, Treasure Hunter (capture the flag), and Territories. The matchmaking mode is usually really good; however, I have been on and seen teams that were severely out-ranked; of course, they were slaughtered.

Conclusion
Uncharted 2 is without-a-doubt, one of the best video games released this generation. The visuals, sound and story are superb, and although, there are a few issues present, this game is still a solid masterpiece. If you own a PS3 and don’t at least rent Uncharted 2, then you shouldn’t be allowed to breath.
