Little King's Story Review

Little King’s Story

Little King’s Story is a unique Nintendo Wii exclusive that follows a young boy who becomes the King of his land.

Graphics

The graphics are excellent! The opening of Little Kings Story is like an animated piece of art. The graphics remind me of a children’s book. The colors are vibrant and the overall design has a uniqueness to it that I haven’t seen in a very long time in a video game.

- 20/20

Sound

The music in Little King’s Story fits it perfectly. The soundtrack contains public domain, re-arranged classical pieces. The audio from you citizens and the various people you run into will speak to you; however, you want know what they are actually saying because it sounds like they are speaking some form of poorly spoken French, but there are subtitles to explain what they say.

- 18/20Story

The story is decent. There is not a whole lot to make you play the game for the story except Howser, who reminds me of Don Quixote, who tends to lend his opinions to you about what you should do next for the kingdom and as a great King. It becomes apparent, rather early, that Howser’s goal is World Domination, seriously, he actually says it to you. Little Kings Story offers a great amount of humor pertaining mostly to Class, nobility, science, art, religion, tv, and Armageddon, too. The story's humor is very clever which makes the game even more enjoyable.

- 18/20Gameplay

Little King’s Story starts off a little slow; however, after about an hour or so, it picks up quite a bit. Basically, in Little King’s Story, you will recruit citizens of your kingdom and train them to become soldiers, merchants, farmers, etc. After that, you can take your selected “royal guard” and explore the world, finding treasures and battling monsters. During your adventures, you will increase your kingdom by defeating other kings and taking over their land. After that, you will unlock more buildings to purchase and build in your kingdom. The buildings will allow for more citizens to be available, more job classes to become available, and other unique attributes like enacting a law that makes your citizens exercise at night so they will have more health if they go into battle.

If you pay close enough attention to your citizens, you can actually send them to the chapel and marry them; thus, they will have kids and you can even use the kids to do a few things in the kingdom, like climb trees and dig holes to find items. Also, you will receive letters from fans and other people. Some of these will contain side quests that you can take to find unique items or enemies.

For the most part in Little King’s Story you will use the analog stick on the nunchuku and the A and B buttons on the Wiimote. The controls are very simple but there is really no need for any complex controls in this game. Your Royal Guard will follow behind you like Pikmin and you just point somewhere with the analog stick and press A to send one person to that spot to either fight, build something, collect taxes, etc. Also, note that you don’t point with the Wiimote, this game doesn’t incorporate the Wiimote’s RF sensor, which to me was an excellent design decision.

There is only one problem with the game, and that is it’s save points. There is only one, at your throne, inside your castle, in the middle of the world. This definitely limits your adventures early on and causes you to waste time.

- 19/20Replayability

Little King’s Story will take around 35 – 50 hours to complete. Sadly, there is no New Game+, but there are other things to do besides taking over the world, like tracking down 100 pieces of art a poor art dealer lost, unlocking 20 extra songs, finding a verity of different weapons and armor to equip citizens with and charting the different animals of the world.

- 18/20Conclusion

Little King’s Story is an absolutely amazing game. This title is actually the reason why, after two years, I bought another Wii. This charming game will appeal to almost everyone. If you own a Wii you better freaking buy this game!

Final Score

- 93/100
